Friday Night Swing Dance Club FAQs
What is the Friday Night Swing Dance Club?
The Friday Night Swing Dance Club (FNSDC) is a not-for-profit social dance group whose goal is the promotion of dancing for fun. We are open to the public (ages 16 and up), are alcohol- and smoke-free, and meet every Friday night to dance to great live bands.
Do I have to join the club to attend? Do I need to bring a partner?
No, you don’t have to join the club to come dancing, although if you attend regularly you may want to purchase a discount card (see below re: cost). And no, no partners are necessary, though some people do come with a partner.
Where do you meet?
We meet at the American Legion Hall located at 125 York Rd., Towson, MD 21204 (just off York Road behind Papa John’s Pizza). The hall has a huge, beautiful wood floor and is heated and air-conditioned. There is plenty of free parking.
Do I need to be an expert Swing dancer?
Dancers of all abilities and experience (including no experience) are welcome. Each dance starts with an hour-long lesson in Beginning Swing. And we also offer lessons in Swing, Ballroom, and Latin dances (all levels) on weekday evenings (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday).
How much does the Friday night dance cost? And what’s included in the admission fee?
The fee for the Friday night dance is $15, which includes a Beginning Swing lesson that starts at 7:30 p.m., the dance with a live band from 8:30-11:30 p.m. (a different band each week), and light refreshment. For regular attendees we sell a discount card ($25) that gives a $3 discount to all dances. The 2018 card goes on sale Friday, August 4, 2017, and is good until September 1, 2018. We also offer a $3 discount for full-time students with student i.d.
What should I wear?
The dress for our dances is casual. We suggest that both women and men wear shoes that slide on the floor (e.g., have leather soles) and stay on your feet. Because Swing dancing can be vigorous, we recommend comfortable, light-weight clothing, with another layer to wear in transit or when you’re sitting one out. Women should avoid dangly jewelry or scarves.
What sorts of people usually attend? (Older? Younger? Single? Married?)
You’ll find people of all ages, from 16 to 80+, dancing with each other. The FNSDC is a great destination for singles, singles groups, and meet-up groups: more than 80% of the people are single and feel comfortable enough to come to the dances alone (remember—no alcohol means you won’t encounter the typical bar scene). About 20% of attendees are coupled. The best part about our dances is that most people change partners: both singles and couples discover that dancing with different people is a great way to make friends and improve their skills. The Friday Night Swing Dance is a safe, fun environment for everybody.
